Hi everyone :D

Its been way too hot for me so have not taken that many pics lately, especially insects. I have taken some Little Egret pics that I am pleased with at long last. Managed to get these at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve the other week.

Linda, those photos really are superbly splendeedoo, stunningly beautiful.
Are you using RAW? Sorry I am lacking in technical knowhow, but someone recently explained the differences between jpeg etc ..RAW is the bees knees, what do you use? errr..perhaps thats a trade secret?

Thanks Ian and Carol, glad you liked the pics :D

Carol, no I dont use RAW (and I know I should lol). These are jpeg pics with only minor processing in Elements 6. I will list below what I used and did if thats any help.

Lighting was good which makes a huge difference with bird shots wherever you take them. For these, I was also in a hide and was mostly able to rest my elbows and hands on the shelf to steady the camera.

Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Lense: Canon 400m F5.6L
Settings: Aperture F5.6 / ISO 200
Spot metering and no exposure compensation.
I cant remember if I had the camera on A1 servo or just One shot as I had been using A1 servo for some Tern in-flight shots, but suspect I put it back onto one shot.

Elements 6 used. Slight crops of all pics to remove wasted space around the Egret and resized for my gallery.
Minor adjustment to Shadows and Highlights ie shadows lightened a little and highlights reduced a little.
Sharpening was 'Unsharp Mask' of only about 24%.
One action using: Filter, Noise, Noise Reduction at 7% (this somehow just gives an extra something to the pic, dont know what lol).
Then imaged saved and uploaded.

With regard to RAW, yes its widely used, but not the be all and end all of getting good photos. I always try to get the best from the camera so that little processing is done. I would probably use RAW if I had time to experiment and practice by following some tuition, so one day I might lol. Tried it once but didnt really know what I was doing and the pics didnt look much different, so I carried on using jpeg lol.

Hope that all helps.

Linda

Hi Linda, thanks for that, most informative. I`m surprised really, you have very little kit beyond a decent camera and lens, but obviously know how to use it properly, what I mean is you use the camera to its full potential . All your photos show that much patience , an artistic eye, and full camera knowledge have gone to create those marvelous pictures. I love looking at your photos ,( here and on your site) and I am always inspired.

Many thanks Jean and Graham - again, thats so kind of you and much appreciated.

I have a few other pics of various things that I really must get loaded - having a little break from it all this year and enjoying observing mostly rather than photographing.
