Common in open woodland, scrub, gardens, orchards and parks throughout England and Wales. Widespread and fairly common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan male 46-58 mm, female 60-78 mm. Unmistakable, males come freely to light, but females are seldom seen. Larva feeds within wood of various deciduous trees, over-wintering two or three times.
