Local in damp woodland and field edges, occurring in very local, isolated colonies in central southern England, the southern Welsh border counties and Derbyshire (MBGBI Vol 2). In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight the majority of records are from the south-east of the county. Wingspan 7-9 mm. Imago seldom encountered at light, and more likely to be recorded in the larval stage, when mines are relatively easy to find where they are present. Larva is a monophagous miner of Grey Alder, a non-native tree, often used as a windbreak around fields, larval damage being evident where this plant occurs, over-wintering as a pupa in a cocoon.
