Main: (Yponomeutidae / Yponomeutinae)
16.003 [B&F: 0426] Apple Ermine (Yponomeuta malinellus) Zeller, 1838

Notes: Local in orchards throughout much of Britain as far north as the central lowlands of Scotland, but less common than formerly, probably because of the extensive use of insecticides (MBGBI Vol 3). In Hampshire infrequently recorded, the extent of the distribution improperly known due to confusion with Y. padella, and not recorded from the Isle of Wight for over 100 years. Wingspan 20-23 mm. Imago most readily distinguished from Orchard Ermine Y. padella, which see, by the white ground colour of the forewing, but the two species only reliably separated with reference to the larval foodplant. Larva feeds on Apple, living gregariously within a silken web.
