Local in woodland, rocky areas and hedgerows in England and Wales, as far north as Lincolnshire and Worcestershire; also recorded from Northumberland (MBGBI Vol 3). In Hampshire widespread in the south of the county, but very local in the north; there have been no recent records from the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 15-18 mm. One of the more distinctive Yponomeuta, distinguished by the grey head, pale grey wing and lack of dots in the terminal area. Most likely to be confused with darker individuals of Y.padella. Larva feeds on Orpine, living gregariously within a silken web, over-wintering as a pupa.
