Rare (proposed as a future Red Data Book species) in woodland, downland and waste ground in parts of southern England. In Hampshire recorded for the first time in August 2009, when several larvae were found in seedheads of Wall Lettuce in Hen Wood, East Meon. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 11-14 mm.
P. gilvicomana and
P. curvistrigana are readily distinguished from other species of
Phalonidia and from species of
Gynnidomorpha by their characteristic ochreous-yellow forewing markings and heavy infuscation;
P. gilvicomana may be separated by the more extensive infuscation in the postmedian area [Bradley]. Larva feeds within seedheads of Wall Lettuce and Nipplewort.
