Endangered (proposed as a future Red Data Book species) in coniferous woodland and plantations in parts of England and northern Ireland. Not reliably recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 11-13 mm. Similar in coloration to E. nanana but larger and differs in the basal patch of the forewing; in E. nanana the outer edge is angulated below the middle, whereas in E. nigricana the angulation is above the middle [Bradley]. Larva mines buds of European Silver-fir.
