Common in open woodland; 0-2000 m throughout much of Fennoscandia and mainland Europe; in Britain, appears as a rare migrant, often in the east, and sometimes in numbers, as in 1976, 1995 and 2006. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight an extremely rare immigrant. Wingspan 60-65 mm. Larva feeds on Willow, Sallow and Poplar.
