A species of central Europe, also known as the Violet Fritillary, due to the purple hue of its underside. There are around eight historical records, all of which are believed to relate to introductions, all from the 19th century apart from one in the Forest of Dean in 1907. In our area, one was found near Christchurch in Hampshire (now Dorset) in 1887.
