Common in open woodland, hedgerows, roadside verges and chalk downland throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight local and rather uncommon in open woodland where the foodplant flourishes. Wingspan 24-30 mm. The most likely confusion species is Small Rivulet P. alchemillata, which is smaller and has two teeth on the extension of the dark basal area into the white band; Rivulet has a single tooth. Larva feeds on Red Campion, over-wintering as a pupa.
