Nationally scarce (Na) breeding in long-established birch and coniferous woodland in parts of eastern Scotland; also appearing as a migrant on the southern coasts of England. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight at least four were recorded in the county in 2009, the first since 1997, part of a large influx to the country from the continent (back tracking indicates an origin in the Alps) with more than twenty-five records across the southern half of the country and in the Channel Islands - more than half the past total seen in England. Wingspan 25-30 mm. Habitually holds its wings at rest in a closed position reminiscent of (and therefore mistakable for) Dingy Shell Euchoeca nebulata. Larva feeds on Bilberry and Cowberry.
