73.272 [B&F: 2162] Glaucous Shears (Papestra biren) (Goeze, 1781)

Notes: Local on moorland throughout much of south-western England, north-western England and Scotland. In Hampshire the only record remains that of one at East Stratton, Micheldever on 6 May 1990. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 32-40 mm. In northern Scotland and on the Scottish Islands worn specimens of Marbled Coronet Hadena confusa f. ochrea are often very similar to Glaucous Shears, but can usually be separated by their very round, whitish or pale ochreous orbicular stigma, with a quadrate ochreous mark below (MBGBI Vol 9). Larva feeds on Bog-myrtle, Meadowsweet, Creeping Willow, Bilberry and Heather, over-wintering as a pupa.
