Local on rocky places on coasts, and high moorland inland, in Scotland, northern England and Ireland. In southern England, known from just one locality, at Folkestone in Kent. Unlikely to be recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 34-42 mm. Could be confused with f. obscura of Dusky Brocade A. remissa. Larva feeds on roots and lower stems of various grasses, including Rough Meadow-grass and Wood Meadow-grass.
