Nationally scarce (Nb) in woodland and heaths in three discontinuous areas: southern England, north-western England and near Aviemore. In Hampshire known from a few sites across the county, and possibly under-recorded, but not recorded on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 14-18 mm. More frequently recorded in the larval stage, when the galls are fairly easy to find where they are present; the imago can be separated from other Lampronia species by their relatively plain appearance. Larva feeds within branches of Birch, forming galls.
