Nationally scarce (Nb) in coniferous woodland and plantations throughout much of Britain. In Hampshire local amongst spruce in both vice-counties and, although not often seen, it may be bred from fallen cones collected in early spring - this was the case for the first county record in 1986, in Ampfield Wood (VC11) and in Feb 2023, 12 were reared from cones collected in Chawton Wood: all other records in our area relate to adults to light. New to the Isle of Wight in May 2016 during a 6-day spell when 22 individuals were reported across all three vice-counties, and therefore almost certainly relating to a dispersal event. Wingspan 10-15 mm. Reminiscent of
C. conicolana but differs in having golden yellow irroration on the distal three-quarters of the forewing, a transverse medio-dorsal stria extending to the costa and a weakly marked ocellus [Bradley]. Larva feeds within cones of Norway Spruce.
