Local in ancient woodland and scrub throughout much of western Britain. In Hampshire believed extinct. The species used to be taken regularly in the New Forest and occasionally in the Chandlers Ford area, and in Woolmer Forest, but the last known record is of two at Aldridgehill Inclosure in July 1958. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 28-33 mm. Fairly unmistakable. Larva feeds on Beard Lichen and various lichens.
