Local on moorland in northern England, Wales and Scotland; also appearing as an uncommon migrant in south-eastern England. In Hampshire recorded for the first time at Whitehill in vice-county 12 in August 1964, with a second nearby in the Deadwater Valley in August 2007; elsewhere four were recorded on Hayling Island in two days in August 2006, and there have been singletons at Boldre in July 1968 and Woolston in August 1995. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 38-42 mm. The most likely confusion species is Ni Moth Trichoplusia ni, which see for differences. Larva feeds on Heather, Bilberry and Bog-myrtle.
