2020 Annual Report for: Crambidae / Crambinae

For species seen in 2020 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.

For the maps, all records prior to 2020 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2020, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').

In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. Initials in the species accounts refer to the recorders listed here. Please get in touch if you identify any omissions or errors, in particular if you have records that have yet to be submitted. Details of how to submit records can be found here.

63.077 [B&F: 1290] Chilo phragmitella (Hübner, [1810]) - Local

Local in reed-beds and fens throughout much of England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight common in extensive reed-beds, mostly on the coast, and an occasional wanderer elsewhere, with only a few records from northern Hampshire, at Leckford, Fleet Pond and Old Basing. Wingspan male 24-32 mm, female 30-40 mm. Males are unmistakable; females could be confused with female Schoenobiinae, but in those species the costa is convex towards apex, whereas in C. phragmitella it is distinctly concave [Goater]. Larva feeds within stems of Common Reed and Reed Sweet-grass.

Nationally scarce (Nb) on dry heathland, in England and southern Scotland. In Hampshire locally common in the New Forest and in similar habitat in the north-east, but extremely scarce elsewhere in the county. 63.100 [B&F: 1314] Catoptria margaritella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) - Local

Local in bogs, damp heathland and mosses throughout much of Scotland, northern England, south-western England and Wales. A surprising first record for the area was one trapped in the New Forest in 2019, and followed by another a year later. Wingspan 20-23 mm. Readily separable from C. permutatella, C. osthelderi and C. speculalis by the absence of a cross-line dividing the median longitudinal stripe; C. furcatellus has uniformly coloured, mahogany-brown forewing with narrower, dull white median longitudinal stripe [Bradley]. Larva feeds on various grasses and various mosses.

63.103 [B&F: 1317] Catoptria verellus (Zincken, 1817) - Migrant

Rare immigrant to southern England from mainland Europe. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight there are recent records from Southsea in 2001, Ventnor and Sandy Point in 2006, and two on the Island in 2009. Wingspan 17-18 mm. The scruffiest in appearance of British Crambids, and easily overlooked as a small, dusky C. falsella, or ignored altogether [Goater]. Voucher specimen should be retained for confirmation of identification. Larva feeds on mosses growing on Apple, Plum and Poplar, but there is no evidence of breeding in the UK.

63.109 [B&F: 1323] Pediasia contaminella (Hübner, 1796) - Nationally Scarce B

Nationally scarce (Nb) on dry grassland and golf courses from Hampshire to Essex. In Hampshire, absent from much of the centre of the county, but relatively common in the north-east and south, where a notable site is Sandy Point on Hayling Island. On the Isle of Wight very intermittently recorded, with just one record every ten years on average. Wingspan 20-30 mm. The main confusion species, P. aridella, and P. contaminella both share characteristic resting posture with head down and abdomen pointing obliquely upwards, but P. aridella is more obviously streaked longitudinally. Larva feeds on stems and leaves of grasses such as Sheep's-fescue, living within a silken tube.

63.110 [B&F: 1324] Pediasia aridella (Thunberg, 1788) - Nationally Scarce B

Nationally scarce (Nb) on coastal saltmarshes in parts of southern and eastern England. In Hampshire mostly confined to the coast, but there are a few records inland in the New Forest, at Hinchelsea Moor, Homlsley, Brockenhurst and Blashford Lakes. Four individuals trapped in 2013 marked the first Isle of Wight records since 1856. Wingspan 20-26 mm. Glossier-winged than P. contaminella, which lacks the fuscous streaking; P. aridella lacks the bar-shaped discal mark characteristic of Agriphila inquinatella, in which the hindwing is devoid of marking [Goater]. Larva feeds on stems of Common Saltmarsh-grass, living within a silken tube or tent.
