70.039 [B&F: 1718] Oblique Striped Phibalapteryx virgata (Hufnagel, 1767) - Nationally Scarce

Nationally scarce (Nb) on sandy heathland in Breckland, chalk downland in southern England, and sand-dunes at various points along the coasts of England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight still occurs on the dunes at Hayling Island, with occasional records from the chalk, particularly on Broughton Down. Wingspan 22-25 mm. Most likely to be confused with Oblique Carpet Orthonama vittata, but that species has streak from apex of forewing to about half-way along termen. Larva feeds on Lady's Bedstraw, over-wintering as a pupa.

70.045 [B&F: 1732] Shaded Broad-bar Scotopteryx chenopodiata (Linnaeus, 1758) - Common

Common in calcareous grassland, acid heathland, woodland rides, roadside verges, sand-dunes and gardens throughout the British Isles, a species of conservation concern under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight much less common that in the past, however large colonies still occur locally in dunes and amongst scrub on downland. Wingspan 34-38 mm. Only likely to be confused with unseasonably early examples of Mallow Larentia clavaria, which see. Larva feeds on White Clover, Red Clover, Hare's-foot Clover and Vetch.

Local in fens, water meadows, damp woodland, marshes and river-banks throughout much of the British Isles, a species of conservation concern under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight an uncommon marsh-inhabiting species, records of which are scattered thinly across the three vice-counties. Wingspan 24-27 mm. The most likely confusion species is Oblique Striped Phibalapteryx virgata, which see for differences. Larva feeds on Marsh Bedstraw and Heath Bedstraw.

Immigrant from southern Europe, appearing mainly in southern Britain, with occasional records north to the Orkneys, in some years arriving in sufficient numbers to breed. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight a common immigrant, which is widely distributed throughout in some years. Wingspan 18-21 mm. Highly sexually dimorphic. Larva feeds on the leaves of various herbaceous plants, although the exact plant species utilised in the United Kingdom is unknown, but unable to over-winter in significant numbers.

Larva feeds on various Cruciferae, including Garlic Mustard, Shepherd's-purse, Hairy Bitter-cress and Cabbage, over-wintering as a pupa.

Uncommon, in damp grassland, water meadows, marshes, river-banks and damp areas in parts of southern England and south-eastern England. In Hampshire first reported at Wherwell in 1964, and now established in the upper valley of the River Test in damp woodland containing the larval foodplant, and also beginning to appear in the Itchen Valley. The only report from the Isle of Wight was back in 1999. Wingspan 27-30 mm. Occurs in two forms, a pale spring generation and a darker summer generation, the former most recalls Sharp-angled Carpet Euphyia unangulata and Wood Carpet Epirrhoe rivata. Larva feeds on Orange Balsam, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in gardens, woodland, hedgerows, downs, fens, moors and sand-dunes throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 24-27 mm. The oft quoted field mark used to distinguish this species from red forms of Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet X. ferrugata, the notch on the inner edge of the cross-band, close to the costa, has proven to be unreliable, and only moths with black cross-bands can be assigned to this species without dissection of the genitalia. Larva feeds on Bedstraw, Ground-ivy and Dock, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in gardens, woodland, hedgerows, downs, fens, moors and sand-dunes throughout the British Isles, a species of conservation concern under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. Widespread and common in Hampshire, but rather scarce on the Isle of Wight, with just four records there so far this century. Wingspan 24-27 mm. Very similar in form to Red Twin-spot Carpet X. spadicearia, which see; the red form, which has yet to be reliably identified from Hampshire, should be treated as indistinguishable without dissection of the genitalia. Larva feeds on Bedstraw, Ground-ivy and Dock, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in damp woodland and hedgerows throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 25-28 mm. The only likely confusion species is Red Carpet X. decoloraria, which has a sinuous outer edge to the central cross-band, in Flame Carpet the outer edge of the central cross-band is dentate, with two distinct projections. Larva feeds on certain Cruciferae, over-wintering as a pupa.

Local in mature, often damp, woodland, fens and scrubby heathland throughout England, mainly in southern counties; present at low density throughout north Hampshire, but decidedly scarce in south Hampshire, mainly in the New Forest, and recorded only once on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 29-32 mm. The main confusion species is Galium Carpet Epirrhoe galiata — both species have a concave costa — the best distinction is the outer edge of the central cross-band, which is slightly crenulate throughout its length in Large Twin-spot Carpet, but more smoothly sinuate in Galium Carpet. Larva feeds on various herbaceous plants, including Bedstraw, Common Dog-violet, and Primrose.

In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight had already become rare by the 1960's (Goater, 1974), still widely distributed, but now found most frequently in hedgerows on the chalk. Wingspan 26-31 mm. Unmistakable when fresh. Larva feeds on Lady's Bedstraw and Hedge Bedstraw, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in hedgerows, gardens, rough meadows, woodland rides, downland, heathland and freshwater margins throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight still reasonably common, especially on the chalk, but as the species comes rarely to light, is undoubtedly under-recorded. Wingspan 28-32 mm. Unmistakable. The UK population is divided into several allopatric subspecies representing Britain, Shetland, Ireland and the Blasket Islands. Larva feeds on various herbaceous plants, including Cleavers, Bedstraw, Wormwood and Dock.

Common in a wide range of habitats, including hedgerows, woodland, calcareous grassland, acid heathland, moorland, fens, sand-dunes and gardens throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 27-30 mm. An abundant species, which may be confused for superficially similar, but much scarcer species, such as Wood Carpet E. rivata and Galium Carpet E. galiata. Larva feeds on Cleavers, Lady's Bedstraw and Hedge Bedstraw, over-wintering as a pupa.

Local on sea cliffs, sand-dunes and shingle beaches along the coasts of western Wales and southern England from Somerset to Kent, and inland, on calcareous grassland, in England and more rarely in Ireland and Scotland, a species of conservation concern under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight remains fairly common on the coast, but is now very rare inland, on the chalk. Wingspan 28-32 mm. The most likely confusion species is Common Carpet E. alternata, but can also be confused with Large Twin-spot Carpet Xanthorhoe quadrifasiata, with which shares concave costa. Larva feeds on Lady's Bedstraw, Hedge Bedstraw and Heath Bedstraw, over-wintering as a pupa.

Nationally scarce (Nb) in damp woodland, ravines and sunken lanes in southern England, Wales and southern Ireland. In Hampshire the majority of recent records are restricted to two main areas: in and around Woolmer Forest and north-west of the New Forest. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight since 2007. Wingspan 31-34 mm. Fairly unmistakable, with two teeth on the projection of the dark central band into the white postmedian area. Larva feeds on Stitchwort, over-wintering as a pupa.

Local in woodland and hedgerows throughout southern England; fairly widespread and common across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 27-30 mm. The most likely confusion species is the much less common Cloaked Carpet E. biangulata, which differs in having irregularly-dentate outer edge of dark cross-band. Larva feeds on several species of chickweed and stitchwort, over-wintering as a pupa.

In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread but scarce in deciduous and open coniferous woodland where there is a good growth of bramble. Wingspan 34-38 mm. Unmistakable. Larva feeds on Bramble, Dewberry, Raspberry and Hazel, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in rough ground, gardens and allotments throughout much of England, Wales and western Scotland, a species of conservation concern under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight local and uncommon in coastal localities and inland on rough ground and in neglected corners of allotments. Wingspan 33-39 mm. The most likely confusion species is Northern Spinach Eulithis populata, however that species has two points on the distal projection of the postmedian fascia, whereas Dark Spinach has a single point. Larva feeds on Goosefoot and Orache, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common on roadside verges, rough ground, gardens, marshes and river-banks throughout the British Isles, but absent from northern Scotland. Widespread and locally common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight, especially along the coast and in the New Forest. Wingspan 36-40 mm. The most likely confusion species is Shaded Broad-bar Scotopteryx chenopodiata, which is smaller, has less deeply notched inner edge of central cross-band, and flies earlier in the year. Larva feeds on Common Mallow, Marsh-mallow, Tree-mallow and Hollyhock, over-wintering as an egg.

Common in a wide range of habitats, including coppiced woodland, fens, heathland, scrub, parks, gardens and moorland throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 26-39 mm. The main confusion species, May Highflyer H. impluviata and Ruddy Highflyer H. ruberata, are largely over before July Highflyer begins to emerge; in addition, July Highflyer has a single apical streak, the other two species have two or three short, parallel apical streaks. Larva feeds on Hazel, Creeping Willow, Bilberry and Heather.

Common in damp woodland, marshes, river-banks and other damp areas throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire, but scarce on the Isle of Wight, with only two records so far this century. Wingspan 30-34 mm. The main confusion species is Ruddy Highflyer H. ruberata, which is often reddish-brown and has a more westerly and northerly distribution, but grey forms of Ruddy Highflyer are difficult to distinguish from May Highflier. Larva feeds on Alder, over-wintering as a pupa.

70.082 [B&F: 1771] Juniper Carpet Thera juniperata (Linnaeus, 1758) - Common

Common on chalk downland and in gardens, in much of southern England, North Wales and Cumbria, less commonly on moorland in upland areas of Scotland. Since the 1960s increasingly reported on cultivated juniper species in gardens throughout much of England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight very local on downland, but despite occasional records elsewhere, there is no real evidence that the species is taking to cultivated junipers in gardens, as it is in some other parts of the country. Wingspan 26-29 mm. The main confusion species is Cypress Carpet T. cupressata, but Juniper Carpet lacks the series of darks streaks near the apex of the forewing. Larva feeds on Juniper, especially Prostrate Juniper in upland areas, over-wintering as an egg.

Increasingly common in parks and gardens in parts of south-eastern England. First recorded in mainland Britain in 1984 in West Sussex, and now established across much of southern England. In Hampshire now locally common in the south of the county and on the Isle of Wight, appearing in North Hampshire for the first time in 2001, and with some regularity from 2006 onwards. Wingspan 28-32 mm. The main confusion species is Juniper Carpet T. juniperata, which see for differences. Larva feeds on Monterey Cypress.

Common but nowhere numerous, in damp woodland, hedgerows, scrub, orchards and gardens throughout lowland England and Wales; fairly well distributed in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 22-28 mm. Combination of white ground colour and blue-grey terminal band is distinctive. Larva feeds on Alder and Blackthorn, with which it appears to be particularly associated In southern England, over-wintering as an egg.

Common in broad-leaved woodland, calcareous grassland, hedgerows and gardens throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread, although less common than formerly, and normally associated with dog-rose in hedgerows on the chalk. Wingspan 25-30 mm. Unmistakable. Larva feeds on Dog-rose and Burnet Rose, as well as Cultivated Rose, over-wintering as an egg.

Common in broad-leaved woodland, hedgerows, scrub, parks and gardens throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 27-21 mm. Easily recognised by the characteristic central band, which is pinched at the mid-point. Larva feeds on various broad-leaved trees and shrubs, including Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Downy Birch and Pedunculate Oak, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in gardens, allotments and woodland throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight appears to be one of the species which is benefiting from the increase in average summer temperatures in recent years, with a marked increase apparent in the last ten years. Wingspan 37-42 mm. Could be confused with a late flying Water Carpet Lampropteryx suffumata, which see. Larva feeds on Black Currant, Red Currant and Gooseberry, including cultivated plants, over-wintering as an egg.

Common on heathland, moorland, fens, sand-dunes and open woodland throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight frequent on heaths and boggy moorland in the New Forest and the north-east, and in suitable habitat elsewhere in the county and on the Island. Wingspan 35-40 mm. The most likely confusion species is Northern Spinach Eulithis populata, but in that species the media fascia of the forewing is less distinctly V-shaped and more jagged. Larva feeds on Sallow, Creeping Willow and Aspen, over-wintering as an egg.

Common in gardens, hedgerows, roadside verges, woodland edges and scrubby grassland throughout the British Isles; common and well distributed in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 33-38 mm. The main confusion species is Spinach E. mellinata, with which it shares distinctive resting posture, but central band usually concolorous with forewing, and fringes of forewing plain, not chequered as in Spinach E. mellinata. Larva feeds on Cleavers and various bedstraws, over-wintering as an egg.

Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 29-34 mm. Occurs in two forms, one in which the central band is broken by a continuation of the notched proximal margin of the band, and one in which the central band in unbroken. Larva feeds on Rosebay Willowherb, Broad-leaved Willowherb, Great Willowherb and Enchanter's-nightshade, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in broad-leaved woodland, hedgerows, moorland and gardens throughout much of Britain and Ireland. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight has increased in numbers and extended its range in in recent years; once more or less confined to the New Forest, it is now widespread, especially in the south. Wingspan 30-36 mm. The most likely confusion species is Autumn Green Carpet C. miata, but that species is larger and paler, and the forewing usually lacks reddish-brown streaks. Larva feeds on Oak, Blackthorn, Apple, Wild Cherry, Japanese Cherry, Dog-rose and Rowan.

Widespread and very common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 32-39 mm. Very variable, with some forms resembling corresponding forms of Dark Marbled Carpet C. citrata, which see for differences. Larva feeds on various woody plants, including Silver and Downy Birch, Bramble, Heather, Privet and Hawthorn.

Widespread, in woodland, heathland, scrub, hedgerows and gardens, throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight, rare but perhaps overlooked. Wingspan 32-40mm. The most likely confusion species is Common Marbled Carpet C. truncata, but that species has a less acutely angled postmedian fascia on the hindwing, more obvious on the underside. Good photographs of both the upper AND underside or a specimen is required for this species to be considered for acceptance. Larva feeds on Silver Birch, Downy Birch, Heather and Sallow, over-wintering as an egg or small larva.

Local in woodland and moorland throughout much of Scotland and north-western England, spreading into southern England. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight has long been known from the south coast of the Isle of Wight, and also apparently bred for a decade in the Selborne area of North Hampshire, of which A E Aston wrote in Ent Rec J Var 103 (1993): "I first saw (olivata) at house-lights here in Selborne on 16th August 1982, when there were three specimens, with singletons in subsequent years, the most recent arriving on 31st August 1993. Although olivata has occurred on the Isle of Wight and there are unpublished records for south Hampshire (Jim Read pers comm), Selborne appears to be the first locality for north Hampshire. The photographs I have taken this year reveal a form.... rather paler than those illustrated in Skinner and Wilson, 1984. Selborne, with its limestone outcrops and woods, seems to provide a suitable habitat for the species." It can only be presumed the species became temporarily established - it was also taken at Noar Hill in 1997, and was last seen by Aston in Aug 2006. Of the aforementioned south Hampshire records, I have no details. Wingspan 26-35 mm. Fairly distinctive, but like Green Carpet C. pectinataria fades to brownish-yellow with age. Larva feeds on Hedge Bedstraw, Lady's Bedstraw and Heath Bedstraw.

Common in a wide range of habitats, including gardens, hedgerows, roadside verges, calcareous grassland, heathland, open woodland and high moorland throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 25-29 mm. A very distinctive moth, but prone to extreme fading, when can resemble White-pinion Spotted Lomographa bimaculata. Larva feeds on Hedge Bedstraw, Heath Bedstraw and Cleavers.

Widely distributed throughout the British Isles on heathland, moorland, downland and woodland margins. In Hampshire and Isle of Wight scattered across the area, but never common and in small numbers. Perhaps overlooked due to its early flight season and nondescript appearance. Wingspan 26-31 mm. Mottled veins are the best distinction from other nondescript spring geometers, such as Early Tooth-striped Trichopteryx carpinata. Larva feeds on Lady's Bedstraw, Heath Bedstraw and Cleavers, over-wintering as a pupa.

Common in damp woodland, scrub, hedgerows, high moorland, fens and gardens throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight generally rather uncommon, but widely distributed. Wingspan 32-38 mm. The main confusion species is Devon Carpet L. otregiata, which see for differences. Superficially similar to a number of other species, including Phoenix Eulithis prunata, but has a pair of small notches on basal edge of broad bar on forewing. Larva feeds on Lady's Bedstraw, Heath Bedstraw, Hedge Bedstraw and Cleavers, over-wintering as a pupa.

70.104 [B&F: 1751] Devon Carpet Lampropteryx otregiata (Metcalfe, 1917) - Nb

Localised in damp woodland insouthern and south-western England, and southern and western Wales. Formerly quite scarce, the 21st century has seen a range expansion from the south-west northwards to Cumbria, across the Midlands into East Anglia. In southern Hampshire, not uncommon in parts of the New Forest, along the edges of damp rides, but very scarce in the north. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 27-30 mm. Most likely to be confused with Water Carpet L. suffumata, but differentiable as below.


While the patterning and wing coloration are quite similar in Lampropteryx otregiata and suffumata, the latter is consistently 25% larger than otregiata, with the forewings having a much sharper apex. The mostly darker median fascia is narrower, its outer boundary forming sharp points on the veins m1 and m2, while this area is more rounded on otregiata. Significantly, suffumata flies almost a month earlier, so when fresh specimens of Devon Carpet are on the wing, Water Carpet will be almost over.

Larva feeds on Marsh Bedstraw and Fen Bedstraw, over-wintering as a pupa.

Extremely common, in woodland, parks and gardens throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight abundant throughout: the map shows an unjustified bias towards the New Forest. Wingspan male 28-33 mm, female wingless. Larva polyphagous on most broad-leaved trees and shrubs, causing sufficient damage to be a serious pest in some areas, especially in orchards.

Common in ancient and mature broad-leaved woodland throughout much of the British Isles. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight the species declined alarmingly from the middle of the 20th Century. In the 1940s, it used to be so common as to be described as 'literally swarming', but a 1992 sighting in Barry Goater's Chandlers Ford garden was the only record there for many years in an area where it was previously common. Still relatively widespread on the Isle of Wight, and in the woodlands inland of Southampton with scattered records elsewhere. Wingspan 20-22 mm. Distinguished from superficially similar species by small size and pure white ground colour. Larva feeds on Hazel, Hornbeam, Silver Birch, Downy Birch and Wild Rose, over-wintering as a pupa.

Wingspan 23-25 mm. Always rests with wings closed, when appears remarkably similar to Rannoch Looper Itame brunneata, with which there is no overlap of range in Britain. Larva feeds on Alder, over-wintering as a pupa.

Nationally scarce (Nb) in ancient woodland and woodland clearings in southern England and the Welsh Marches, a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire extremely local in certain mature deciduous woods, flying by day in open, sunlit glades where the foodplant flourishes. The remaining strongholds are now Pamber and Harewood Forest in the north of the county, and Bentley Woods and Crab Wood/West Wood in the south. There are no recent records from the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 18-23 mm. An unmistakable, but nondescript, day-flying moth. Larva feeds on Wood Spurge, over-wintering as a pupa.

Wingspan 26-32 mm. A nondescript, rather plain, light brown moth, with numerous faint, dentate cross-lines; outer edge of forewing and, especially, hindwing scalloped. Larva feeds on Buckthorn, over-wintering as an egg.

Nationally scarce (Nb) and declining, in coppiced woodland in England and southern Scotland, and on moorland in north-western Scotland and the Hebrides, a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight used to be very common in the New Forest and other extensive areas of birch woodland during the 1940s, having previously been rare. It is now rare once more, and absent from most of its former strongholds. It was last seen at Botley Wood in 1988, Fleet Pond in 1991 and Pamber Forest in 1999. The only extant colonies appear to be at Bentley and Harewood Forest. Wingspan 34-38 mm. Unmistakable, flying by day over birches. Larva feeds on Downy Birch, Silver Birch and Bog-myrtle, over-wintering as a pupa.

Local in woodland, scrub, hedgerows, calcareous grassland and acid heathland throughout much of England, Wales and southern Scotland. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight local and uncommon. Wingspan 38-48 mm. The most likely confusion species is Scarce Tissue Rheumaptera cervinalis, which see for differences. Larva feeds on Buckthorn and Alder Buckthorn.

Common in open woodland and hedgerows, and on downland and calcareous grassland throughout much of southern England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight like Small Waved Umber H. vitalbata, depends upon Clematis, but unlike this species, has declined considerably in recent years, and is seen most frequently on the downs. Wingspan 31-36 mm. Characterised by streak on dorsum at one third, and streak on abdomen, which together form a single streak when the moth is in its natural resting posture, but see the recently discovered close relative Cryptic Fern H. radicaria which could potentially turn up in our area. Larva feeds on Traveller's-joy and Cultivated Clematis.

70.1271 [B&F: N/A] Cryptic Fern Horisme radicaria (La Harpe, 1855) - Migrant

Very closely related to the more common and widespread Fern H. tersata, H. radicaria was added to the British list from a specimen taken in East Sussex on 22 May 2019, and a number more from East Sussex and Kent in 2020 indicate that it is now resident locally in those two counties; retrospective records from East Sussex in 1990 and Kent in 2004 and 2007 make it probable that it has been present for a number of years. The species does appear to have experienced a north and westward range expansion on the near continent, so its arrival may be relatively recent. The first for our area were recorded on Hayling Island in 2020. See Clancy and Smith in Atropos: 66 for more details.

Adults should be photographed and retained for dissection, as distinguishing features between radicaria and tersata are subtle, especially if the moth is worn. The above quoted article has full details, but in summary radicaria has a longer, more defined apical streak, stronger cross-lines and darker forewing tone. Like its congener, the larval foodplant is Traveller's-joy Clematis vitalba. Both species are double-brooded in Britain, found between May and early September.

Common in woodland, scrub, hedgerows and gardens, on calcareous soils throughout southern England, a species of conservation concern under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight fairly frequent on the chalk, but absent from much of the New Forest and the far north of the county, and has shown a decline in recent years. Wingspan 35-43 mm. Fairly unmistakable. Larva feeds on Traveller's-joy, over-wintering as a pupa.
