2023 Annual Report for: Lyonetiidae / Cemiostominae

For species seen in 2023 that had less than or equal to 100 records, full details are included; for more common species, the earliest, latest and highest count by vice-county are shown. The narrative for each species is taken from the main Hantsmoths website, and it is possible that some information on abundance and occurrence can get out of date, as it is impossible to keep up with all changes; however it should give a good introduction to each species. The tables in each species account summarise the previous status, and that for the current year.

For the maps, all records prior to 2023 are shown by a blue dot (the larger the dot, the more recent), with the current year's records shown in red. As previous records are superimposed on any report for 2023, new sites have greater emphasis (i.e. will show as 'more red').

In the species accounts, an asterisk next to a location indicates a new 10km square record; earliest ever dates are highlighted in orange, and latest ever in red. Initials in the species accounts refer to the recorders listed here. Please get in touch if you identify any omissions or errors, in particular if you have records that have yet to be submitted. Details of how to submit records can be found here.

21.003 [B&F: 0259] Leucoptera lotella (Stainton, [1858]) - Nationally Scarce A

Nationally scarce (Na) on dry downland, and in marshes and other damp areas, in south-east England, Yorkshire and western Ireland. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight only regularly recorded in and around Botley Wood and Southwick in the south-east of the county, and very rare elsewhere. Wingspan 5-6 mm. Adults easily overlooked, and not particularly common at light, and more frequently recorded in the larval stage, when mines are relatively easy to find where they are present. Larva mines leaves of Bird's-foot Trefoil and Greater Bird's-foot Trefoil, over-wintering as a pupa.

21.004 [B&F: 0254] Laburnum Leaf Miner Leucoptera laburnella (Stainton, 1851) - Common

Common in gardens and urban areas throughout much of the British Isles, north to the Highlands of Scotland. In Hampshire widespread and often abundant in gardens in the vicinity of Laburnum, rather less common on the Isle of Wight. Form wailesella (Stainton 1857), previously considered a separate species, has been recorded, on Hayling Island in 1982. Wingspan 7-9 mm. Imago similar to L. spartifoliella; easily overlooked and not particularly common at light; more frequently recorded in the larval stage, when mines are relatively easy to find where they are present. Larva mines leaves of Laburnum, and also has been reported on Dyer's Greenweed; over-winters as a pupa.

21.008 [B&F: 0260] Pear Leaf Blister Moth Leucoptera malifoliella (Costa, [1836]) - Common

Common, appearing in profusion in hot summers, in hedgerows, orchards and gardens throughout much of England, Wales and southern Scotland; otherwise, rather scarce. In Hampshire irregularly distributed in the south-east and north-west; on the Isle of Wight mainly restricted to the north coast. Wingspan 7-8 mm. Most records are of the larval mines, but occasionally recorded at light, the main confusion species being L. lotella, but forewing of L. malifoliella broader, with no purple-black apical spot, and third cilial bar directed more or less outwards (MBGBI Vol 2). Larva mines leaves of Hawthorn, Apple and Pear, causing sufficient damage to be a serious pest in some years, and over-wintering as a pupa.
